Ian Stewart AO APM appointed as Chair of Crime Stoppers Australia

Crime Stoppers Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Ian Stewart AO APM as Chair of the national board.

Dr Stewart is a highly respected law enforcement and public safety leader whose career spans more than four decades of dedicated service. A career police officer, he served as Commissioner of the Queensland Police Service from 2012 until his retirement in 2019, leading the organisation through significant operational, cultural and technological transformation.

Throughout his tenure, Dr Stewart held leadership roles across several national law enforcement boards and committees, including a sub-committee of the National Counter Terrorism Committee. He was also Queensland’s inaugural State Disaster Coordinator following the state’s unprecedented 2010–11 disaster season, coordinating major response and recovery efforts that have since become a model for emergency management nationally.

Dr Stewart’s outstanding contribution to policing and community safety has been recognised with multiple Honorary Doctorates from the University of Southern Queensland, Griffith University, and Charles Sturt University. He also holds a Master of Public Policy and Administration and a Bachelor of Business, is a Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia, a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and an alumnus of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Executive Institute.

Dr Stewart has been closely involved with the Crime Stoppers network for several years, serving as Treasurer of Crime Stoppers Queensland since 2020 and joining the Crime Stoppers Australia Board as a Director in 2022.

“I am honoured to be appointed as the Chair of Crime Stoppers Australia and continue supporting our mission to empower everyday Australians to help make their communities safer,” Dr Stewart said. “The strength of our program lies in the trust we build between the public, police, and partners – together we can make a real difference.”

Crime Stoppers Australia welcomes Dr Stewart’s appointment and looks forward to his leadership in advancing the organisation’s vital role in crime prevention, public awareness and community safety across the nation.
